This breed is not recommended as first-time pets for families with children. If properly socialized and trained, these dogs are steady and obedient, but if mistreated, lacking obedience training or handled rough, these giants can develop behavior disorders that are difficult to live with. This breed is naturally protective of the territory and of the owners. Males are often possessive and territory; they make excellent guards and personal protectors. Females are more easy-going, but can also be aggressive when in heat. Spayed females make excellent family companions.
